Gift from Grandfather Sixty Years Ago Results in a Re-Issue of "I Am An American: What Every Citizen Should Know"
Houston, Texas—September 11, 2013--Sixty years ago, Oni Sellers-Roberts was given a book by her grandfather that was a primer on America’s foundation for freedom laid by the Founding Fathers. Today Oni honors her grandfather, Benjamin Callaway Sellers, and her country with a re-issue of this national treasure that will help stoke the burning desire for freedom in everyone who reads it.
Entitled “I Am An American: What Every Citizen Should Know”, this book heralds our freedoms through inclusion of the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, the Monroe Doctrine and assorted poems and tomes reminding us of the importance of the freedoms we so often take for granted.
Throughout the years, Oni turned to the little book for wisdom, counsel and comfort, a book that was originally issued in the 1940s to immigrants reaching our shores through Ellis Island, New York. After the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Oni pored over the writings for solace and clarity in those troubled times. It became her dream to one day publish the book for a contemporary citizenry without the moral compass given to us by the great men and women of the 13 original colonies.
The book, originally compiled by Frances Cavanah and Lloyd E. Smith, is destined to be an outstanding family treasure. In the new Foreword of the book Oni writes, "Americans have embarked on a journey to recapture our destiny and save 'we the people'. I knew that I must be a part of the momentum to 'take back America'."
It is an ideal gift for graduates, US service men and women, immigrants, newly weds, baby gift, law school students, attorneys, politicians, lawmakers and every citizen that treasures the freedoms that only America possesses.
